Building Peaceful Minds, One Child at a Time

Founder's Story — By Kirokwa Mirembe

As a child, I wasn't always the "book-smart" student. I was confident, creative, and outspoken but that wasn't always celebrated. In school, I often felt unseen and "not smart enough" because I didn't learn as quickly as others. My grades were poor, and some teachers even called me dumb or incapable.

Still, I was blessed with my supportive late father, who never gave up on me, as well as a great support system from my family and friends. However, even with their constant encouragement, it was hard to believe in myself when I had already been labeled a failure, which is something I had come to believe and internalize about myself. For years, I struggled, especially in math, a subject where I had received F's since primary school.

Everything changed when I transferred to a new school, where teachers taught with patience and believed in me. Slowly, I began to do the same. With consistent effort, self-belief, and a shift in mindset, I went from being an "F student" to an A+ student in math, something I once thought was impossible.

That experience taught me one of the most powerful lessons of my life: real change begins from within. When we stop comparing ourselves to others, believe in our potential, and nurture a positive mindset, we create room to grow and thrive.

Today, as a psychology student and mental health advocate, I have maintained a place on the Dean's List every year since my freshman year of college, which is a reminder of how far I've come. But my journey isn't just about me. It's about the countless children who might be going through the same struggles of feeling unseen, misunderstood, or lacking the right support.

That's why I founded Mirembe Minds Initiative, to create spaces where children are understood, supported, and empowered to believe in themselves. Through programs like Thrive at Hill, I hope to help students build emotional awareness, develop healthy coping skills, and see that no matter their challenges, they can overcome and achieve greatness.
